There’s No Hong Kong Language Who said that there’s only one language spoken in Hong Kong? The official languages of the city are Chinese and English. What! English but why? A many people don't know the fact that Hong Kong was once capture by British ruled and later handed back to China only in 1997 and thus the area has some English influence and a lot of English speakers! That’s sort of a good thing for tourists who don’t know Chinese! Another point of interest is that Cantonese is more common in the city than Mandarin, both being different dialect of Chinese. If you speak one of these dialects, you may or MAY NOT understand the other so don’t take it for granted!

It’s Not Asian NYC Even though Hong Kong is often referred to as “the New York City of Asia”, it is anything but that! People who’ve been to this wonderful city would tell you that it is more like a tropical island with a splash of skyscrapers! Obviously Hong Kong boasts of a spectacular skyline with more than 1200 skyscrapers, more than both Tokyo and New York! But haven’t you heard about the nearby national parks, marine parks, beaches, waterfalls and mountains?
We’ve always thought of Hong Kong as a metropolitan city but surprisingly, about 3 quarters of the total 426 sq. miles is countryside! So in case you are more of a hiker than a lover of skyscrapers, you can rejoice because you can choose from 50hiking trails in and around the city!

Skyscrapers have gaping holes When you land in Hong Kong, one of the first things that will make you uneasy is the concept of having holes in skyscrapers. But relax, it is nothing to worry about. In fact, they are created to ensure safety. These holes are called Dragon Gates and according to the Chinese principle Feng Shui, these holes allow dragons to fly from the mountains to the water each day.
So what if the idea is not based on principles of construction, it ensures safety because the Chinese believe that blocking the Dragon’s path leads to misfortune! You may believe it or not but clicking a few pictures of these strange skyscrapers won’t hurt so maybe carry your camera!

Smoke Free Areas Hong Kong is not the place a smoker would want to be trapped in! Smoking is banned indoors including in restaurants, bars, cafes, shopping malls and office buildings. You could have lived with these laws because a lot of cities don’t appreciate smoking in enclosed spaces but it doesn’t end here! Hong Kong prohibits smoking in outdoor places like parks, beaches, swimming pools, and public transport facilities.
When your fingers tremble for a smoke and you are in Hong Kong, God help you! If you want to smoke in your hotel room, ask for a smoking room at check-in because not all hotels have this provision. Seems like Hong Kong is the ideal destination when you are trying to quit smoking!

Hong Kong Island Don’t be confused with the names, Hong Kong Island is just a part of Hong Kong, much like the other 260 islands! Although a vast majority of these islands are tricky to get to, there are about a dozen or so little isles within easy ferry distance, all offering different experiences. If you are dying to see the laid back popular beaches of Hong Kong, you gotta be heading to Lamma Island but if you want to savor some awesome seafood, Cheung Chau is your place. In case it’s the historic Tai O fishing village that excites you Lantau is where you should be at! The point is that each island is unique and deserves your attention, don’t be hung over on Hong Kong Island!

Dim Sum For Foodies Hong Kong should penalize tourists who give dim sums a complete miss from their list of “delicacies to try”! There’s a great variety of bite-sized dishes to try out, such as barbecued pork puns, steamed shrimp dumplings, rice noodle rolls, glutinous rice wrapped in lotus leaves, and much more. Wait, we are in no way saying that your plate should look like a dim sum advertisement! Hong Kong’s culinary scene has much more to offer than excellent Cantonese food. The best airport Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok International Airport is one of the most popular and best airports in the world? We aren’t being biased here, the airport is actually pretty amazing. After all more than 100 airlines operate 1,100 daily flights to and from 190 destinations worldwide.
Do you realize what that means? You can travel any country from thus Hong-Kong , wow! Another plus point is that the airport itself is easily accessible from downtown, just 24 minutes on airport train. That’s more than one reason to travel to and from Hong Kong, time to jet off!

The A/C is always on Let’s face it, Hong Kong is always humid! You don’t need us to tell you that humidity is best friends with sweating. It needs to be prevented because sweating and humidity give rise to fungus. Excuse us if we managed to gross you out which was pretty much our plan!
Anyway, the point is that to beat this humidity, the A/C is always on full power. You’d think we are joking but the truth is that every indoor space is freezing cold. You might want to carry a scarf or light cardigan if a strong A/C is not your cup of tea!
